Tony Schwarz, the author of The Way We're Working Isn't Working has an article full of practical advice on the Harvard Business Review Guest Blog, under the title Six Keys to Being Excellent at Anything.
The six keys are:
1 - Pursue what you love
2 - Do the hardest work first
3 - Practice intensely
4 - Seek expert feedback, in intermittent doses
5 - Take regular renewal breaks
6 - Ritualize practice - for example, do it at regular, inviolable times.
The article reminded me of the work done by Malcom Gladwell in his book Outliers. I encourage you to read it. Tony Schwarz acknowledges the work done by Anders Ericsson and others to determine that if you wish to be excellent at anything you need at least 10,000 hours of practice.
